The MSSA Art Department is delighted to announce that ten MSSA Middle School students
earned Superior ratings in the Junior Visual Art Scholastic Event (Jr. VASE) for Region 20
West. The annual Texas Art Education Association visual art competition recognizes
exemplary intermediate, middle school, and junior high student artwork, with
professionally credentialed art jurors interviewing students and evaluating their
artwork. As a member of TAEA, Art Teacher Margo McCarthy is qualified to register her
students for this event. She is a frequent juror for Jr. VASE and High School VASE
competitions throughout Texas.
Judges calculated rankings by combining scores from written answers to interview
questions with scores evaluating the art itself. In the interview, student artists
responded to inquiries about their research, execution and technique, use of elements
and principles of design, aesthetics and critical judgment, and personal expression in
their art. Evaluation of the works was based on visual evidence of artistic purpose,
technique, personal expression, organization, and integration of aesthetic and critical
judgment.
A Platinum Medal award goes to Camila Williamson, whose piece was judged
as one of the top 10 percent of participants earning a Superior rating of 4!
